Background: With the increasing number of pregnancies complicated by diabetes, it is essential to develop a straightforward and reliable method for monitoring the fetal cardiovascular system, which can be adversely affected by maternal hyperglycemia. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of ductus venosus Doppler velocities in pregnant women with diabetes.
Methods: The study involved 40 pregnant women with normal pregnancies as a control group, compared with 40 diabetic individuals in their third trimester. Each participant underwent a thorough medical history review, physical examination, laboratory analysis of HbA1c levels, and Doppler ultrasonography evaluation of their ductus venosus.
Results: The 5-minute Apgar scores were lower, infants were born with higher birth weights, and mothers with diabetes had higher BMIs. Regarding the Doppler evaluation of the ductus venosus (DV), all DV indicators, including the pulsatility index, preload index, and peak velocity index, were significantly higher in the diabetic cases than in the controls. Among the diabetic subjects, those with poor diabetes control had even higher DV indices. There was a strong correlation between the preload index and pulsatility index with pre-gestational diabetes. Neonates with low 5-minute Apgar scores had significantly higher pulsatility and preload indices compared to newborns with normal scores.
Conclusion: The ductus venosus Doppler values in pregnancies complicated by diabetes were significantly different from those in non-diabetic controls, which may have implications for fetal cardiac function.
